A Five-Day Intensive Immersion with Mark Stephens
Breathing is the only vital function that is both automatic and voluntary, making it a unique bridge between body and mind, physiology and psychology, conscious intention and unconscious processes. For thousands of years, contemplative traditions have recognized the breath as a gateway to health, meditation, and spiritual inquiry. Modern science, meanwhile, has revealed extraordinary insights into how breathing influences nearly every system of the body, from cardiovascular and respiratory function to emotional regulation, attention, and cognition.
This five-day immersion explores breathing through both of these lenses—ancient wisdom and contemporary science—while inviting participants into a deeply personal and experiential relationship with the breath itself.
Rather than presenting a single doctrine or technique, the immersion examines the remarkable evolution of breathing practices across cultures and centuries, from the Vedas and Upaniṣads to Buddhism, Tantra, Haṭha Yoga, and modern yoga. Along the way, we'll distinguish historical teachings from later interpretations, examine common misconceptions, and explore how traditional ideas about prāṇa, the vāyus, nāḍīs, and subtle body can be understood with both intellectual rigor and experiential openness.
Each day combines lectures, discussion, movement practice, pranayama, meditation, and self-inquiry. Participants will investigate the anatomy and physiology of breathing, the role of the diaphragm, oxygen and carbon dioxide, nervous system regulation, and the growing body of scientific research on breathing and well-being. At the same time, they will cultivate increasingly refined awareness through carefully sequenced breathing practices that support steadiness, vitality, clarity, resilience, and contemplative presence.
Throughout the immersion, participants are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and engage directly with their own experience. Historical scholarship, scientific evidence, and traditional teachings are presented not as competing authorities, but as complementary ways of understanding one of the most fundamental dimensions of being alive.
Whether you are a yoga teacher seeking to deepen your understanding of pranayama or a dedicated practitioner wishing to enrich your personal practice, this immersion offers a comprehensive and integrated exploration of the breath. By the end of the week, participants will have a clearer understanding of how breathing works, how breathing practices have evolved, how they can be practiced safely and effectively, and how a lifelong relationship with the breath can support greater health, awareness, resilience, and human flourishing.
